Why Headlamps are Better than Flashlights
I have a cabinet full of flashlights that don't get used, yet the headlamps in the drawer seem to be in demand all the time. Why is that? I can tell you one good reason, we have two hands, not three.
Ever try carrying a bucket of water out to the horses while juggling a flashlight in the middle of the night? Maybe not, but you might of tried carrying your toddler to the bathroom while camping.
I've done the holding the flashlight under my arm, tucking it between my head and neck, and even holding it in my mouth when looking for something. Where is the extra hand when you need it?
A head lamp may not be an extra hand, but the idea to strap a flashlight onto your head to free up your hands is ingenious. Headlamps are compact and easily fit in a purse, back pack, or glove box.
To be honest, my first Black Diamond headlamp was a gift from my brother-in-law. One of the best Christmas gifts I ever received.
Many Uses For Headlamps
- Walking your dog in the early morning (I'm not a morning person)
- Setting up a tent at night (I have done this though)
- Working on your car engine, under your car or searching under the seats
- Reading in bed at night (better than fumbling with a book lamp)
- Power outages during storms
- Emergency light during hurricane, tornado, or floods
- Gathering firewood for the fireplace from the wood pile
- Checking on the horses in the barn (have done this)
- Walking back from the restrooms at the campground (yup, been there, done that)
- Searching for a lost cat at night, and carrying her home (can you imagine juggle a flashlight)
- Use on your sailboat (did I mention the Storm Headlight is waterproof?)
- Caving or spelunking in your favorite hole or cave
- Searching into the backs of closets for that lost shoe, glove, or Christmas present
- Taking out the garbage (yes we always leave this till 10 pm)
- Night fishing, frogging, trapping, hunting (you get the picture)
- Hiking on the trails, how often have you stayed out later than you expected?
After reading this list I'm sure you can think of many other occasions to use a handy head lamp. Below are additional options, lumen (light strength and range) ratings, and various prices. I'm sure you can think of one, or two people that would appreciate an extra hand. It might even be you.
