A Review of Ferris Beullers Day Off
Bueller,.. Bueller,.. Bueller?
Say three words to anyone who was a teenager in the 1980's and they will know exactly the movie you're refering. Ferris Beullers Day Off. You say you never heard of it? Never saw this classic movie which crosses all generations, and has a cult following. Let me enlighten you.
In my opinion It was this movie that "made" Matthew Broderick a star. One component of a classic timeless movie is the quotability factor. So in great movie fashion my review will be liberally sprinkled with Ferris Bueller quotes.
Ferris will forever be known as the wise cracking popular kid in high school who knew how to skip school and get away with it with style. Oh to be so popular that the "sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, dickheads - all adore him. and think he's a righteous dude."
Who doesn't wish for a day of rebellion, a day off from school, a day off from work, just because you want to enjoy life.
" Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
Ferris Buellers Day Off was released in 1986. By that time I was out of high school and in college, but the lure to take off for the day, get away from tests, teachers, responsibility was still there. Heck, as an adult I still want to be Bueller for a day. The secret to a great skip day is to have the day of your life. "The question isn't "what are we going to do," the question is "what aren't we going to do?"
With his best friend Cameron, and girl friend Sloane, Ferris takes them on a day they won't ever forget. Not everyone love Ferris though, his sister Jeannie (Jennifer Grey) knows Ferris for who he really is and just slightly resents he gets away with everything. The high school principal Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) also knows Ferris is up to no good and the subplot is how Ferris almost gets caught.
All during the movie I just remember thinking, how in the world can you do all these things in just one day? I wonder if anyone has tried?
Just a few things Ferris did on his day off
- Faked being sick for his parents with an elaborate genius plan
- Breaks his girlfriend out of school by faking a funeral
- Sang "Danke Schoen" in a parade
- Went to a baseball game at Wrigley Field
- Visited the Art Institute of Chicago
- Looked out the top of the Sears Tower
- Dined in a 5 star restaurant by posing as Abe Froeman, the Sausage King of Chicago
- Took a 1961 Ferrari 250GT California for a joy ride
Ferris Buellers Videos and Clips
Not that I want to give away the whole movie, but here are just a few scenes that make the movie great.
The official movie trailer, he looks so young in this movie, wait I guess he was. Everything just works for Bueller. "He gives good kids bad ideas"
Ed Rooney's phone call trying to trip up Ferris excuse. "Just come down here and kiss my big white butt, pucker up buttercup"
The making of Ferris Buellers Day Off. Behind the screens look of the genius John Hughes. Rumor had it the script was written in six days before a writers strike. He wrote, produced and director the entire movie.
Famous lines from Ferris Buellers Day Off. If you are a fan of the movie you will recognize every one of these scenes. See how many you remember. "He's a righteous dude"
"Well Shake it Up baby, Twist and Shout" is the famous parade scene in the movie and might be the most well known scene in the whole movie. I dare you not to bogey, dance a little bit and bob your head. Yes, I want to be in this crowd when this happens. How come this hasn't been reenacted in Chicago at some point?

Other Matthew Broderick Movies
I do like Matthew Broderick on IMbD he has a certain style and timing to his acting that draws you into the character, story and plot. He has been in over sixty movies and acted on Broadway, which is another sign of a tremendous actor when you can be a success on stage. Here are just a few of my favorites.
