An Inspirational Horse Movie

Updated on February 18, 2014

The Little Horse That Could

The horse Seabiscuit wasn't just a race horse, he was a symbol of a struggling nation and a hope that any ordinary person could become great. I loved horses growing up and had a collection of Breyer horses, part of that collection was famous race horses like Secretariat, Ruffian, and Seabiscuit.

My Mother grew up in the dust bowl era in Oklahoma and I remember my Mother telling me stories about Seabiscuit races. The only electronic form of entertainment in the 1930's was the radio and race announcers provided the drama. It was a window into another world from the dreary lives of the depression.

Cast Offs and a Misfit Horse

Toby McGuire plays the "chip on his shoulder" jockey (Red Pollard), picked out of oblivion, to ride a horse who is the last hope of Charles Howard, a down on his luck car dealer who just buried his only son. Seabiscuit was too small, to be a winner, he had a limp, but trainer Tom Smith sees something in him; courage, spirit, and determination.

Together this team of castoffs and misfits beat all odds and win races, not only win, but win with a passion that drives a nation and brings the common man to their feet to cheer the little horse in the biggest race of his life. A title race against Triple Crown Winner War Admiral.

I'm not going to spoil the rest of the movie. Buy it, watch it and I dare you not to get chills and feel a little bit better about people and the world.

Seabiscuit Commentary and Reviews

Still thinking about whether or not to buy a copy of Seabiscuit? Watch some of the commentary and interviews with the director, actors and key players associated with the movie. Hear the original race broadcast and be inspired. Seabiscuit is not just about a horse, it's about a piece of American History.

"You don't throw an entire life away just because it's banged up a little"

Grandson of Man O' War, but passed over time and time again, Seabiscuit liked to sleep, and eat. He grew bitter and angry until someone who believed in him gave him hope.

"Seabiscuit Fixed Us", Everyone thinks we found a broken down horse and fixed him, but we didn't he fixed us, we fixed each other.

Original 1938 film broadcast of the match race between Triple Crown Winner War Admiral and Seabiscuit. My Mother was seven years old when she listened to this race on the radio with my grandfather.

I didn't know that Seabiscuit was a remake. The original movie starred the child star Shirley Temple. One of her rare movies as a teenager.

one of the Greatest Moments in Sports History. The original radio broadcast of the 1938 race between War Admiral and Seabiscuit.

Other Great Horse Movies

I was a typical horse crazy teenage girl and not only read every horse book I could get a hold of growing up, but watched every horse movie. Today as an adult I still love a great horse movie. These three movies are probably my favorite, but all I have to do is get out another one, like Horse Whisperer and my mind changes.

Secretariat (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
Secretariat (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
In the theme of race horse horse movies is another feel good soon to be classic. Secretariat is a triple crown winner who has still yet to be beaten in the record books. The story behind the great horse is just as compelling as Penny Chenery Tweedy, a woman owner beats the odds in a mans world.

Black Stallion, The
Black Stallion, The
The Black Stallion movie is not only one of my favorite horse movies, but my favorite childhood horse book. I must of checked this book out of the library twenty time. The Black Arabian Stallion is caught in a shipwreck with young Alec Ramsey (Kelly Reno) and together they find friendship on a desert island in the middle of the ocean. The love between boy and horse, the scenery on the beach will touch your heart.
