A Christmas Cookbook You Will Actually Use

Updated on October 29, 2014

Christmas Baking Tradititions

Who has cookbooks? Who has cookbooks they don't use? Who uses Pinterest for their recipes? Me, Me, Me on all three questions. Finally a cookbook I will actually use every year and keep going back to.

Taste of Home recipes are created, submitted and tested by regular people who shop in regular grocery stores, not gourmet stores. Taste of Home recipes use common ingredients and combine them into amazing, delectable desserts to eat at home, take to a church social, potluck, or family Holiday dinner.

I have been a fan of Taste of Home recipes since the mid 1990s when I Taste of Home magazine was owned by Reiman publishing (it has since been purchased). It was a wonderful magazine with no advertisements and packed full of recipes, pictures of food, desserts and had wonderful clip-out index sized recipes. I still use many of those recipes today.

The recipes still remain the mainstay of the magazine, are still submitted by readers and many of the recipes in this Christmas holiday book are past winners of contests, so they are the best of the best.

If Christmas cookies make you think of your Mom and childhood and wishing you could make the same cookies that you had as a kid this book is for your. Anise cookies and even the jelly filled star cookies are here.

Christmas Traditions

It's a tradition in my house to bake cookies, lots of cookies, and give them to neighbors, mail them to friends, and to my Marine Corps sons at Christmas. I am cookie Mom, hear me roar. My kids always ask when I'm going to start making cookies about the first of December. There are many cookie recipes in this book where you can make the dough ahead of time, store in the freezer until it's time to bake them.

Our community normally has Christmas and holiday socials and dinners and I'm always looking for a new recipe I haven't tried to take to the potluck. Everyone loves desserts.

Hint: Write in your cookbook, when you've tried a recipe mark the date and any notes. Your kids and grandchildren will greatly appreciate the personal touch, the hints, notes and any substitutions you made on ingredients. This cookbook will become a keepsake for generations.

Get Kids Involved in Baking

Get the kids involved in meal planning, use a different colored sticky note for each member of the family for them to pick out their favorite recipe.

Most recipes have an accompanying mouth watering photo and it's easy to see why the book will be full of sticky notes and bookmarks.

It will become your favorite go to for just about any meal. Most of these are contest winners of tried and true family recipes from across the country.

Home made soup, casseroles, desserts, salads, appetizers, they are all here in this cookbook which will become a keepsake.

I use only insulated cookie sheets, or my Pampered Chef stoneware sheets when I bake cookies. This prevents the bottoms from getting too hot and over browning, which results in a hard crunchy cookie. My kids all like soft cookies, so I have to watch the timer like a clock.
